Finding your Mac OS X version/build number
Learn how to find the Mac OS X version and build number on your computer. This information is helpful when you update the software or the operating system.
Finding your Mac OS X version number
To find the Mac OS X version number, click the AppleĀ icon, and then click About This Mac. The About This Mac window opens, and displays the OS X version number.

In the example, the version is 10.7 (OS X Lion).
Finding your Mac OS X build number
Follow these steps to view the build number for your Mac.
- Click the AppleĀ icon, and then click About This Mac. The About This Mac window opens.
- Click the word ‘Version’ to toggle through the version, build, and serial number information for your Mac.

Note: You can also access the OS X version and build number from the System Information dialog box. In the About This Mac window, click More Info to open the System Information dialog box.
